Suggest Treatment For Poor Concentration While Having Depression

I am a 71 year old healthy retired school teacher who is taking 75 mg of Effexor for depression. The depression has gone away but I am still having trouble focusing or concentrating to read. I took one of my grandson s Adderall capsules because I had read that adults with those symptoms could possibly have attention deficit. My focus and concentration improved within two hours and stayed for the duration of the day. My question is should I ask my MD to prescribe me Adderall along with Effexor? Regina

Hello,

There are three basis symptoms seen in depressed patients: Low mood, easy fatiguability and loss of interest in activities.

Besides them other features include poor appetite, poor concentration, sleep disturbance, anxiety symptoms, negative thoughts etc.

You did not mention about your mood, but feeling tiredness or easy fatiguability, poor concentration, poor memory are towards underline depression.

At age of 24 years, due to stressful life, chances of depression is very high.

Treatment in depression depends upon the severity of depression whether it is mild, moderate or severe and for that mental status examination is important.

I think, you should consult a psychiatrist for your mental examination. That would help you get over the problem.

In case you need dose of antidepressant and benzodiazepine, psychiatrist would help you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
