Suggest Treatment For Pica Disorder

Hello doctor, I am 30years unmarried female, since child my elder sisters secretly introduced me to eating slate( paati pencil), multani mitti pencils lead or noke, red bricks, cement or tiny stones from walls, red mud of garden, white clay, ash of agarbatti, coal... I have tasted all these and tend to eat whenever I see them or not. My sisters have left the habit as they got married or had affairs but unfortunately I am unable to come out of it. I crave to so much whether I tightly shut teeth and my mouth starts watering thinking of these. I too want to stop this how can I? Pls help. I also mix and eat multani mitti and pencils lead or anything crunchy dirt with multani mitti? M also scared what s inside me? How the elements in these ingredients are spreading in my body? I don t eat daily due to unavailibilty of all these bt whenever i do I eat without caring for myself? Pls help. I feel ashamed

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pica in your case seems to be an obsessive compulsive disorder, However one of the main cause of pica is iron deficiency anemia. Hence, first of all you should be tested for this and if present then treated accordingly. If it does not resolve the problem, then you are advised to consult some psychiatrist regarding this and he may treat you with co-ordination of some mental health care worker.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
