Suggest Treatment For Phantosmia

My husband mentioned that from time to time he smells a weird odor, hard to describe (musty). It appears it happens when he is indoor. He is the only one who can smell it and it happens in several indoor locations, work, home and other places. It does not happens when he is outdoor. We are in Florida and I was wondering if it could be an allergy or something else. Thank you,

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your husband have phantosmia which is due to disturbance in olfactory sensations known as olfactory hallucination. It could be due to infection of sinus as well.

Need not to worry. I would suggest few preventive measures such as

- Take steam inhalation.

- Do saline nasal rinses and maintain complete hygiene.

- Avoid food substances like seafood.

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. Doctor will examine completely and may order blood test and nasal endoscopy . Doctor may prescribe proper antibiotic course. Doctor may also refer you to allergy specialist if he /she find this problem to be due to allergic reaction.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
