Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My Mom, African American woman, 78 yrs old. general good health and active. She is now having her 2nd bout of rectal bleeding. The 1st time was in May. She was Hospitalized for 2 days and released. She is not in any pain. We do have an appointment with her doctor tomorrow. My question is this, is there anything I can do here now at home to help stop the bleeding. And is there anything she can eat or drink that would help replenish any nutrients that she s losing by passing blood?
The reason why your mom could be having rectal bleeding would be due to the presence of hemorrhoids. Considering her age, she might need to be investigated for other causes like colonic cancer also. Hence, she needs to undergo following:
2. Abdominal ultrasound scan and colonoscopy to look for cancerous lesions. Kindly consult Surgeon in this regard for appropriate evaluation and management. You can replenish blood loss by intake of iron rich foods, foods rich in proteins and supplementing with iron capsules.
Hope the information provided would be helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further. All the best.
Regards, Dr. Ashakiran S
