Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough In A Child
Akhilesh aged 9 years is suffering from cough for last 3 years. He is on seroflo 50 2-2 puffs(and duolin 2-2-2 puffs) inhaler whenever he gets cough)with flomist nasal spray for last 1 year.It begins with cold and throat irritation.He needs omnacotil (steroid) and antibiotics if cough turns barking- happend 3 times last year.The recent episode in july did not respond with all the above medicines- steroid (6 days) antibiotocs (9 days) inhalers. He does not have any problem at night with good sleep.No breathllessness.All tests are normal.Pl. advise. thanks. Sreekumar Pillai

Are these episodes associated with fever or breathing difficulty? Is there any history of allergy (asthma, eczema, eye/nose allergy) in his siblings or other close family members?
Three times per year, if not associated with fever / breathing difficulty, need not be worried much. Recurrent cough can suggest an allergy or a chronic infection like tuberculosis. Treatment depends on the cause, and we have to investigate. Your doctor will guide you. Allergic cough will respond to inhaled drugs as you were already given. Also, we have to avoid any triggers like dust, smoke, pets, cold exposure.
