Suggest Treatment For Persistent Constipation

I have been having trouble going to the bathroom for almost a month now. Before this i was usually going between 2-4 times a day. I eat a variety of fruits and veggies and am extremely active. I drink plenty of water and drink coffee regularly. What can be going on/ what can i do? jn

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain constipation can occur due to a number of causes like sudden change in dietary habits, excess intake of dairy, taking a low fibre diet, lack of physical activity, stress, hypothyroidism, diabetes, irritable bowl syndrome, eating disorders etc..
I would suggest you to consult a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated and he can advise you investigations like Colonoscopy, Barium Swallow, ultrasound etc to rule out the exact cause of the problem and treat you accordingly..
You can be advised to take high fibre diet, do moderate workout, take walk after meals, drink plenty of water, take laxatives and stool softeners like Docusate, fibre supplements like Psyllium..
You should eat every after 2 hours..
Go to toilet on the same time every morning and try to evacuate your bowels as it can help in developing habit of regular bowels..You can be advised prescription drugs like Lubiprostone and Lincolotide..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi.

There are many risk factors for constipation, apart from the various conditions that can cause it like: a diet low in fiber, being a woman, being an adult, less or no physical activity, dehydration, medications (e.g. narcotics, anti-hypertensives, sedatives, etc.). Me mentioning that was purely for you to comprehend the various other risk factors.

There are also many conditions that can cause constipation so I would recommend a visit to your doctor and go about a few investigations like an erect abdominal xray, or even a colonoscopy of required.

Best wishes.
