Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 22 year old son was diagnosed with an arachnoid cyst since he was 16 ( size of a softball)on his left side of brain. It was by accident but they still operated on him to insert a shunt, which his body rejected a month later so it was removed. The doctor basically said leave it alone most likely he s been living with this all his life. For the last few days he s been complaining of stubborn headache that won t go away, mood change and his nose bled a couple days ago and again today. I m afraid something is going on. should he go to ER?
First of all, it's sad to know what your son had been going through lately.
Based on the history you have shared, it needs to be reviewed immediately by a neurosurgeon or even an emergency room visit as these can be signs of raised intracranial pressure, and may need Emergency treatment to lower it once it is confirmed on CT scan and fundoscopy, and will need intravenous mannitol infusions or dexamethasone injections to reduce inflammation.
A lumbar puncture may also be needed but only if no risk of brain herniation is present and should be at advice of a neurosurgeon.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
