Suggest Treatment For Pelvic Fracture And Excruciating Pain

My 81 year old husband tripped and landed on his behind, resulting in a small crack in his pelvis. He has severe pain during therapy trying to walk with a walker. His overall health is good and he just passed his physical for a private pilot license. This is day three since the fall, and he is hospitalized. The treatment is to walk with a walker, and he says the pain level is beyond ten if he puts any wt. on the leg on the side that the fracture is located. How long will he experience this pain? He is being told he will recover faster if he keeps trying to walk with his walker (with two staff members assisting him.) Do you have suggestions? I don t want him to go to a nursing home! We have a large home, no steps, wide halls, walk-in shower in one bathroom, whirlpool bath in the second bathroom.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pelvic fracture takes little longer than other fractures to heal and get relieved of the symptoms. If there is no displacement of the bone then he can walk with the help of walker however pain and discomfort may take more than a month to get over. He doesn't need to go to a nursing home and continue to take rest at home itself.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
