Suggest Treatment For Palmoplantar Keratoderma

My 23yr old son has had palmoplantar kerataderma since birth. Very thick skin on palms and soles. He treats mainly with lotions and creams. We did take him to dermatologists when he was a child but he has not been to one in several years. Have there been any developments in last 10 yrs or so in cures or treatments for this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Unfortunately, there is no known treatment of palmoplantar keratoderma. However, different options of management can be tried with varying amount of relief in symptoms. Some of the options may be salt water soaks, emollients, topical keratolytics, topical retinoids, systemic retinoids (acitretin), topical vitamin D (calcipotriol), potent topical steroids, paring (cutting away of layers of skin) and surgery to remove skin followed by skin grafting. Choice of treatment should be under the guidance of a dermatologist taking into consideration of all pros and cons with regard to benefits vs risks.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
