Suggest Treatment For Painful Swollen Lumps And Severe Arm Pain

I have returned from a ct scan with contrast. It took 4 tries to get an IV. I am a hard stick. When they tried to push the contrast in the last vein I was in a lot of pain in that arm. The radiologist said they had enough wih the barium I drank earlier to get results for the doctor. In the meantime I have golf ball sized lumps at my two sites that are very painful. Can you please tell me if I use heat or ice to get rid of some pain and soften and lessen the swelling?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from painful swollen lumps and severe arm pain after 4 tries for IV to put contrast before CT scan. Your symptoms are indicative of inflammation of superficial veins which presents as a painful induration with erythema called superficial thrombophlebitis. Superficial thrombophlebitis include tenderness, warmth and heat along the course of the affected vein, along with swelling in the affected extremity.

The vein may have a palpable cord or knot. Minor superficial thrombophlebitis respond to conservative measures. Warm compresses can help to reduce pain and discomfort. You can take pain relieving medications for relief. Trauma to these veins may lead to phlebitis. This is the most common cause of pain in the arms after putting I.V.

Nerve damage can occur followed by prolonged pain, burning and possibly numbness or loss of function. Some nerve injuries can require long term pain management. If you continue to experience the painful symptoms, get clinically examined by your treating doctor or a neurologist, get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
