Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Foot And Ankle

Good evening! I have had and still continue to have pain in my foot and ankle due to RSD that was diagnosed in 1992. I fractured my calcaneus 2 1/4 , driving it up into the ankle joint. Within three weeks of the fracture date my pain was unimaginable. The swelling in my foot was also hard to explain. The doctor that I was sent to said originally it was only a sprain and the pain would subside. Nothing was further from the truth. Every day the pain increased to the point where I could not even cry anymore. Seven months later I was sent to a pain clinic where the doctor took one look at my foot and ankle, and diagnosed me with RSD, as well as the fractured calcaneus. I had a sub-talor orthrodesis and spent five years in physical therapy, all the while contemplating amputation of my left foot, ankle and a good portion of my lower leg. While the swelling has gone down, my foot and ankle still remain swollen to this day. I am not in therapy any longer, but without a car to drive (five years after this accident, I was diagnosed with epilepsy, and have had many seizures), and no one that will hire me in my current physical shape, I have to walk everywhere. Do any of you know of a treatment for my physical problem in terms of therapy, medications, or any further surgery that would at least make the pain subside? I m willing to hear any advise any doctor would have. Thank you for reading this, Dan Donnelly

Hello,

Cannot say in your particular case, but generally, RSD involves a nerve and nerve pills such as amitryptiline, or lidocaine patch do something.
That is, however, the least of the problems.

Nerves control sensation, motion but also circulation.

It is common, perhaps most of the time, when RSD is severe, there is a compromise of circulation. this leads to bone degeneration, demineralization, fractures, and loss of function of the foot/leg.

X-rays would be an affordable first measure, but there isn't a great treatment for it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
