Suggest Treatment For Pain In Shoulder And Neck

I have been told that I have a grade 3 shoulder separation. I need to add that I have had 2 cervical spinal surgeries. Since I have had this injury to my shoulder, it has aggravated my neck, and I feel like something is slipping in my shoulder. I can t lift my arm to make a 90 degree to my body without experiencing great pain in my shoulder and my neck. I am 54 years old, and had been very active until this.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suggested to get clinically examined by an Orthopedics and confirm grade 3 shoulder separation as it requires urgent management / treatment. Grade 3 shoulder separation is the most severe shoulder separation. In this the AC (acromioclavicular) joint is out of position due to the tearing of the AC ligament and the CC ligament. Do not be forceful with your arm. Avoid lifting it. It requires to be at rest till it heals. Take pain relieving and anti-inflammatory medications after taking food to get relieve from pain.

Your treating doctor will give you a protective sling so that your shoulder separation is at rest and heals. It may take 2-3 weeks time. Keep patience. As the ligament and tear heal, the strength will return but do not unnecessarily strain. You will be put under a Physical therapist in the right time to help restore normal position of the joint and strength.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
