General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The presence of intermittent pain and popping sound in the lower back region can be caused by various causes for instance; compression of vertebral disc, arthritis, osteopenia or ankylosing spondilitis. The first and most crucial investigation in your case is x-ray of spine, and also few blood tests like serum vitamin D levels, RH factor and CRP levels.

It is important to start weight reduction with low calorie, balanced diets and low impact work-out at home. Increased BMI can decrease the vitamin D production in the body and thereby result in osetopenia. Once that happen, chances of the vertebral bone collapse increases and that leads to compression of the spinal nerves.

I suggest you to request your GP to order the above mentioned tests and examine you for possible ankylosing spondilitis as well. In addition, you can start taking low dose vitamin D supplement daily to your routine and start taking steps towards weight loss journey to improve your overall health.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
