Suggest Treatment For Pain And Plugging Sensation In Ears

I started with what felt like a head cold then one day my right ear plugged up and was so painful after only a matter of hours that I went to Urgent Care. Now I have just finished the 10 day course of Amoxicillin that doctor put me on for a severe ear infection. I feel completely better, except that my hearing in my right ear is still really diminished. I still feel some slight pressure in my ear. I can sometimes create a popping nose by plugging my nose and mouth and exhaling or when I swallow/yawn but nothing fully clears my ear. Do I need to go see a doctor again? Should I wait and see if my ear eventually drains and I can hear again? If so, how long should I wait before it becomes truly worrisome and I need to see a doctor? I don t want to be half deaf the rest of my life.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you have not completely recovered from severe ear infection and are still having trouble hearing, you are suggested to take antihistamines (Fexofenadine (Allegra), for 3 days). Take analgesics for 3 days to reduce any internal swelling or inflammation. It should get better. If not then get a follow up clinical examination and audiometry test done. You may need a repeat course of antibiotics. Avoid visiting swimming pools and don't let water enter into your ears when you bathe. Do not touch, clean or scratch your ears.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
