If it was an contusion injury it is better to see the Orthopedecian for an Xray to rule out any broken bone.

Still even if the bone is broken, you have to immobilize the area as much as possible. Pressing it further as you say you were doing will worsen and complicate the things. That is if it wasn't broken or partly broken it will be if you keep pressing . The circulation is high and fast right now therein because of the inflammation that has resulted from injury. It is meant to be so because the healing process requires more nutrients. The color is dark because some blood has oozed out in tissue and Red Blood Cells have been broken down.

Slowly as the healing furthers, the nail will slowly detach and fall away. It is dead tissue already but you shouldn't remove it by force. This so because the tissue underneath is raw and healing. Skin and nails are the best dressings of contusion injuries and nature detaches them away after the healing is complete. So have heart and take some paracetamoles for pain relief.
That's all.
