Suggest Treatment For Nystagmus For My 8-month-old Daughter

Hi, I have a 8month old baby girl. I m Indian with drak brown eyes, black hair and brown complexion. Same with my husband. But our daughter s complexion is very fair, eye color grey, hair color light brown. When she was 2.5 months old her paediatric suggested to consult an opthalmologist for her coz he found nystagmus problem with her. We went to hospital, there when they throw the torch light on her face and started moving she dint follow it. then they said as she has less pigmentation on all over her body she might have less pigmentation in her retina also. He spoke about ocular albinism, congenital. and said as she is very small so lets catch up after few months. We took one more opinion. He checked her eyes with dilation and said its very early to say about this as nystagmus in 3 month old baby is impossible. Then we consulted Shroff eye center in Delhi. That doc had her MRI and VEP test. MRI was fine. But in VEP she told that when light was fluctuating and thrown on her eyes then her brain gave irregular pattern. She said might be her optic nerves are weak. as eye development goes for an year also in some cases visit again after 6months. Now she is 8months old. We showed her one more opthalmologist, he saw d VEP report and said there is an issue according to this report. eye sight is not normal. We need to have her eye sight checked. And said to use an ointment which has to be put in her eyes 3 times a day for 3 days. so that her retina gets dilated and they can check her eye sight. but with this he also said that this ointment has not been used frequently and it has side effect also like eye or face redness face swelling, stomach upset, eye allergy. I m really worried what to do now. Pl suggest the way forward.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Several medical and surgical treatments that sometimes help people with nystagmus are available. Surgery usually reduces the null positions, lessening head tilt and improving cosmetic appearance. Drugs such as Botox or Baclofen can reduce some nystagmic movements, although results are usually temporary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajeet Singh, General & Family Physician
