Suggest Treatment For Numbness Of Legs After Laminectomy

I had a L4/5 Laminectomy 10 days ago. I still have little feeling in my left leg and enhanced pins and needles feeling in my left leg. Can I expect this to go away or is it going to be permanent damage. Also, I was told to expect extreme pain, but I really do not have a lot of pain, just the continued numbness.

You should not be worried about this. When any spinal surgery is done there is always retraction of nerves and it causes sometime stretching of these structures. Because of this some time there is numbness of the leg. Usually this is not ver serious issue and soon it is going to recovered. It is going to take few weeks to a month for complete recovery. This type of nerve injury is called neuropraxia and it is a reversible type of injury. I would recommend you to take pregabalin and Methylcobal daily for three months.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Noble Zachariah's  Response
Hello,

You had a laminectomy to relieve the nerve compression. When there is compression of the nerve, there is a demyelination of the nerve involved. As this interferes with the conduction of electrical signals through the nerve, there would be some numbness and pins and needles ( paresthesia). This would recover in course of time in most people unless there was a permanent damage to the nerve.
Wish you a quick recovery.
