Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been having some GI issues that started Sunday evening. I had a dinner of salmon, asparagus and rice and woke up at 11pm with a fever (100.7) and chills. Not long after waking up, I got sick and threw up my dinner (yum!) and for the next 24 hours fought my fever and nausea. I was able to keep down fluids but didn't try much else. On Tuesday I kept a low grade fever (no higher than 99.7) and just had diarrhea with my nausea. I also had a liter bolus of NS (nurse perks) because I wasn't peeing much and was concerned about everything going right through me. Today is now Wednesday and while I feel much better and have advanced to solid foods, I'm still having frequent liquid stools that now smell like ammonia. My bowel sounds are the definition of borborygmi despite doses of Imodium with simethicone. Would a probiotic help all of this? I guess I should also add that about 2 weeks ago I had an upper respiratory infection and took a round of antibiotics. And there's a stomach bug going around which is what I had originally attributed all of this to. But the noisy bowels and constant need to go to the restroom are annoying and keeping me up. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Dear patient, Your have had an attack of acute gastroenteritis, bacterial infection, that explains nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever and ammoniacal smell in stools. It is a good idea to start sporolac as the previous antibiotic course has certainly taken a toll on your GI health. Also eat curd and probiotic drinks for 2 weeks after u hv recovered to restore your health. Take high carb fibrous diet for strength and proper digestion. Keep well hydrated at all times.
