Suggest Treatment For Nausea And Chills Post Recovery From Total Knee Replacement Surgery

My sister has MS, she had total knee replacement last Monday, we brought her home from the hospital on Thursday. In the hospital they switched her from Vicodin which she has taken for 3 years for MS (m5325 2xs/ day to Oxcycodone (5mg 1-3 tablets 3xs / day) Since return home she has been displaying withdrawl symptoms (nausea, chills, sweating), to the point where she can t do her rehab and just suffers as with bad flu. So she stopped the oxy on Friday. Her final dose was around 2pm Friday. She took 2 Vicodin Friday night. Yesterday (Saturday) she took nothing, was nauseated until she was able to poop (first time since surgery)and felt pretty ok for about a half hour, since then she s been very sick. Is she withdrawing from the Vicodin? She just took two Vicodin, hoping for relief. Any wisdom appreciated! How to help her?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As a first line management you can take antacids like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole for symptomatic relief. If symptoms persist, it is better to consult a physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Wishing you all the best. Thank you.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
