Suggest Treatment For Mild Osteoarthritis In Knee Along With Medial Meniscus

Left leg ache over a few years gradually getting worse. Originally started as a vague ache down lateral side of left lower leg. Now affects calf and hamstring muscles. Made worse by walking but no problems when cycling. Some slight muscle wastage at medial side of quadraceps towards knee but no weakness.Recent diagnosis of left knee mild osteoarthritis and a medial meniscus undisplaced tear. Reasnoble joint space, orthopaedic consultant felt no surgery required at present. Consultant felt left hamstrings were tight and suggested having back checked out. Developed generalised muscle fasiculations 4 months ago which were checked out by a neurologist followed by EMG studies, diagnosed as benign.Occasional sacro iliac pain which I have rectified by physio. Have always been active in cycling walking and horse riding. Recently identified with osteopenia. Long term cervical spondylosis and mild crusch fracture to thoracic 5,6 over 30 years ago.I am female age 56.

Hello,

Left leg pain on its lateral aspect only while walking is due to muscle fatigue or exhaustion. The following are my recommendations:
1) Left knee mild osteoarthritis can be managed easily with the help of quadriceps exercises.
2) You can take the help of a physical therapist and start doing regular knee joint exercises to strengthen the muscles of knee joint and thereby reduce pain and halt arthritis.
3) Hamstring and calf strengthening exercises are also to be done with the help of a physical therapist.
4) Vitamin D and calcium are to be supplemented regularly.
5) Pain can be relieved by pain relievers like tab. Ibuprofen or tab. Naproxen to be taken twice daily for 10 days.

If your pain is persistent and affecting your daily activities, please do consult a physician for further evaluation like the dappled study of left leg to know if there is any deep venous thrombosis or blood clots In veins.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Left knee mild osteoarthritis and medial meniscal undisplaced tear are chronic conditions which can be managed with medications, rest and exercises. My recommendations are as follows:
1) NSAIDs like tab. Ibuprofen or tab. Naproxen is to be taken twice daily for 2 weeks.
2) To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop is to be taken once daily before food.
3) If you have any problems like kidney failure or bleeding problems, you shouldn't take NSAIDs but opioids like Oxycodone, Hydrocodone and Tramadol can be taken twice daily for 2 weeks.
4) Most important than medication is physical therapy to strengthen the quadriceps muscles. Please mention to your physical therapist that you have medial meniscus undisplaced tear, so that he won't exert your knee much.
5) Calcium and vitamin D supplements are a must daily.
6)Osteopenia is age related and cervical spondylitis can also be treated by physical therapy by strengthening the neck muscles and this reducing pain.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
