Suggest Treatment For Large Hematoma On Right Leg Caused After Injury

Hello... I fell Friday 2/5 on a stairway slipping as my feet went out from under me and I went down on my right buttock... at 1st it just hurt a little but 2 hours later I could hardly walk and tolerate the pain... went to ER where they did a CT scan showing no fracture to tailbone or pelvic... the area is very large and the dr said it was the largest hematoma she had ever seen and suggested we may want to drain it so that it would not cause nerve damage and/or trouble to muscles and down my right leg, however it was a decision that their Orthopedic Surgeon would have to make... that Dr said no as it may cause infection and I should work with pain meds to control the pain, eventually the blood should be absorbed back into my system and due to location, no worry to blood clotting, in fact it will clot to be absorbed... Now that it is Sunday, there is a lot of bruising that is deep purple, the pain is ok but depends on how I move... the area feels like its numb but hurts and feels strange on the inside... they gave me narcotic drugs for pain and to take home (oxyxcodone) but they make me feel awful and I am not taking them as I must return to work tomorrow from being off for a week... please advise what treatment you feel I should pursue... Thank you, Julie

General Surgeon 's  Response
hi.

noted history of hematoma associated with trauma. if the signs and symptoms are persistent and/or progressing, it is best if you consult with a doctor, preferably a general or an orthopedic surgeon, for physical examination and clinical evaluation. if the hematoma is expanding, it is best to drain it. proper antibiotic management will also be prescribed to prevent occurence of infection.

hope this helps.

good day!!
