Suggest Treatment For Itchy Rashes On The Neck And Shoulders

Just wanted to confirm that the best lab test for chicken pox and shingles is an HSV Culture of the rash. This test just came back as Negative Normal. I had an itchy odd looking rash on my neck and adjoining shoulder that is finally going away after a week. I ve had excessive hair loss the last few weeks also. And my joints are achier than usual. Some days I feel flulike. I have not had chicken pox or shingles. I have had the chicken pox shots approx. 20 years ago. My doctor took a sample scraping of my rash last Wednesday. She felt the rash looked like shingles, but there was no pain on the rash site, only itchy.

Hi,

As per your query you have symptoms of itchy rashes on the neck and shoulders which could be due to viral infection, photodermatitis, skin infection, eczema, and other medical condition.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to stop using any cosmetic product and only apply petroleum jelly. You should protect your skin from sun exposure, and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen when in exposure to the sun. Consult a dermatologist for proper examination. The doctor will examine physically, take history, order skin test for allergy and blood test. The doctor may order corticosteroid ointment, anti-allergic medicine, and antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari, Dentist
