Suggest Treatment For Itching On Right Eye After Football Injury

My 4 year old son was hit in the right eye with a kicked soccer ball. he s been rubbing it periodically saying that it s itchy. There s a little bruising underneath his lower eyelid. The lower part of his eye is a little red. Should we be alarmed and take him to the ER, or is this a normal process for the healing.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to eye injuries. I would recommend that you take your son to see an eye doctor as soon as possible. The itching sensation, redness, and bruising could be a sign of an eye infection, inflammation or other complications, and it's important to have it assessed by a professional.

In the meantime, you can use a cold compress to reduce swelling and ease the itchiness. Be sure not to apply pressure to the eye or eyelid, and don't use any over-the-counter eye drops without consulting with a doctor. It's also important to keep your son from rubbing or scratching his eye, as this could cause further irritation or even damage.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
