Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have suffered from insomnia for the last three months, induced by anxiety (major life change). I was prescribed a low dose of Ativan (.5mg) and have been titrating for three weeks on 3/4 tab. I m experiencing muscle spasms in my legs--is this due to the Ativan? I have also been diagnosed with sleep apnea and have been acclimating to using a CPAP machine. I am seeing a sleep physician (neurologist) in a couple of days. If he prescribes gabapentin, is this safe as I titrate off Ativan?
Secondary insomnia is due to some physical or psychiatric condition and for that disease should be treated for good sleep. In her case, she would be treated with benzodiazepines.
The specific doctor you should go is psychiatrist, if you have not consulted, please take her to a psychiatrist as a sleep disorder in allopathy practice fall under psychiatry.
A warm cup of hot milk before 15 minutes to bed can help in good sleep, as my 30-40% of patients don't require medicines after using this remedy.
There are some rules called "Sleep Hygiene" which can be found on the internet. Try to follow them. So her evaluation is needed by a psychiatrist for specific treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
