Suggest Treatment For Infected Tooth And Sinus Infection

I'm pretty sure I have an infected tooth or cavity. I also think I may have a sinus infection, with lots of drainage down back of the throat. At present, the palate of my mouth is irritated. I have a dental appointment day after tomorrow. Should I see a doctor about a possible sinus infection first, or should I wait to see the dentist first since the sinuses may be being affected by the tooth.

Hello,

Yes, you are correct that infected tooth can cause sinus infection provided the tooth is in the upper arch. In case if you doubt that you have an infected tooth, you can consult a dentist first and get evaluated so that he can do a clinical examination and take appropriate x-rays to check for the tooth as well as sinus infection. If the sinus infection is due to tooth then tooth should be treated frost with either root canal treatment or extraction followed by antibiotics and painkillers and he can also add decongestant nasal sprays to it.

Once the infection subsides then ultimately infection in the sinuses will also get resolved. So first consult a dentist and get examined. As of now you can take anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen if there is pain and also use decongestant nasal sprays. Do steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
