Suggest Treatment For Idiopathic Hypoparathyroidism

I took reglan in high school for years. I was diagnosed with ideopathic hypoparathyroidism in graduate school years later. Read the article regarding reglan causes hypoparathyroidism as adverse affect. Is this possible? Curious. Also I am an RN. Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Reglan is unlikely to cause hypoparathyroidism. Reglan is a dopamine antagonist commonly prescribed as an anti-vomiting drug to treat nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and slow stomach emptying. Its common side effects include diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, and headache.

It can also cause Parkinson-like symptoms (such as shaking, slowed / difficult movement, mask-like facial expression), abnormal breast-milk production, enlarged/tender breasts, swelling of the hands / feet, changes in menstruation in women. It is not known to cause hypoparathyroidism.

The common causes of hypoparathyroidism include removal of the parathyroid glands during surgery, autoimmune disease, hereditary, low levels of magnesium, and radiotherapy. Hypoparathyroidism can be treated by vitamin D and calcium supplements.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
