Suggest Treatment For Hypothyroidism

Hi Doctor, I had a baby 10 months back and my thyroid levels were checked duringpregnancy and was normal. now when i went for a routine checkup to my primary care physician they found that i have hypothyroidism ( i actually showed a projection around my neck line and then a blood test and scan was done). My thyroid results are below- thyroxine, serum, free - thyroid stimulating hormone, serum - 92.10 u[iU]/mL I am already on 50 mg LEVOTHYROXINE SODIUM since last week. So my scan results shows hetro generous gland and doctor suggested me to meet a endocrinologist whom i am not having a right away appointment. what could be going on with my thydoid. something serious? they said i dont have any nodules and told me that they just want a specialised doctor to see it. but i wanted to be aware on what to expect as for me this is sudden as i didnt had this condition like an year back and the swelling which i see now came like all of a sudden. it started appearing since last 1.5 months. thanks much!

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM!
The most probable diagnosis is postpartum thyroiditis.
Postpartum thyroiditis is a phenomenon observed following pregnancy and affects about 5% of all women within a year after giving birth. The first phase is typically hyperthyroidism. Then, the thyroid either returns to normal or a woman develops hypothyroidism.
Probably you haven''t noticed the first phase of hyperthyroidism. Of those women who experience hypothyroidism associated with postpartum thyroiditis, one in five will develop permanent hypothyroidism requiring lifelong treatment.

Postpartum thyroiditis is believed to result from the modifications to the immune system during pregnancy.
You will be treated with levothyroxine for some months, as i mentioned in some cases the treatment may be lifelong.
Hope the information will be helpful.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
