Suggest Treatment For Hyperthyroidism With Increased Weight

What would you suggest I do to treat my hyperthyroidism (Graves disease)? I am on carbimazole at the moment which has caused me to put on almost 2 stone in weight. I am 16 years old and although it is not much of an issue in the greater scheme of things, my weight is getting me down. Surgery, iodine?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Weight gain on Carbimazole is a positive sign. This weight gain is what you last earlier due to hyperthyroidism. Please check your thyroid function to make sure that you haven't gone for hypothyroidism on treatment.

The three treatment options in Graves disease are:

1. Medicines like carbimazole - treatment for 18-24 months - can cure upto 50% of patients

2. Radio iodine treatment - Single day treatment - 90% cure rate
3. Surgery - After surgery almost 100% cure rate

Problem with radio iodine and surgery is that you will become hypothyroid after that and have to be on life long thyroxine supplementation. That is the reason most doctors prefer initial medical treatment and if not working opt for surgery or radio iodine treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
With warm regards,
