I am 77. Female. Good health. Exercise. Not overweight. Having strong hot flashes last 8 months. Use 0.1 Vivelle estradiol patch which HALVES the level of pain when I have a migraine. What kind of doctor should I see for this issue? Internist just says that hormones fluctuate. GYN seems to be a technician and hasn t an answer.

Hello,

You are a female and in good health. You are 77 yrs of age and are experiencing strong hot flashes since last 8 months. Menopausal phase (late 40s to early 50s) is a condition when you've gone without a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. You have not mentioned if you have stopped menstruating. However, post menopausal phase is a time when one has not menstruated for an entire year. In post menopausal phase, menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes are common. All women go through it, its normal.

As a result of lower level of estrogen, those in the postmenopausal phase are at increased risk for several health conditions, such as osteoporosis and heart disease. You are suggested to get a complete medical check up done by a GP or an OBGYN. Get all required tests and investigations done. You will be treated accordingly. You can take calcium and vitamin-D supplements as it aids in strengthening bones. You can use vaginal lubricants to increases pleasure and comfort during sex. Do exercises to help stimulates heart and bone health and maintains healthy weight. Take home made nutritious food. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
