Suggest Treatment For Hives On The Face

Hello. About 10 days ago I believe I used a UVC lamp, and shouldn t have, on my face. A few days later I developed what looked like hives all over my face. They grew together so most of my face was red. Then my face swelled up so I didn t recognize myself. On Saturday I called the on call doc at my physicians practice and described my symptoms. He prescribed a 21 tablet dose pack of methylprednisolone 4mg. I m 4 days into the Rx and my face is still almost as swollen--maybe a little less. Then my face was covered with yellow serum scabbing. I ve left that alone and only used aloe for any burn / itch relief. How long should I leave the serum scabs in place and how long might it take for the swelling to go down? There is no infection. I feel completely fine. I m healthy with normal weight, etc. And do you have any other recommendations? Thank You, Ben.

Hello,
Welcome to health care magic,

Urticaria is a skin condition with raised, red, itchy bumps. It is also known as hives.

Allergic hives or urticaria could occur as a result of physical touch, pressure, heat, cold, anxiety, exertion etc.

Since you have already taken methylprednisolone 4 mg then you should try other class of drugs like antihistamines or mat cell stabilizers.

Mostly,it subsides by itself or you may take antihistamines to get rid off itching, swelling and redness.

1) Cetirizine 10 mg twice daily till the rashes disappears.

2) Montelukast one daily can also be added if it does not subside with cetrizine alone

3) A topical soothing lotion (calamine lotion) to be applied over rashes or hives would also be helpful symptomatically.

4) Keep a good eye on thing which is causing the allergic reaction. e.g dust, particular food, clothing etc.

I would expect that you will start improving in 3 to 5 days till then you can wait for the serum scab to go down and in case not, then it would be advisable to see some nearby doctor preferable a dermatologist who may order routine blood counts with ESR after careful inspection this rashes of hives.

Hope this will help you.

Regards,
