Suggest Treatment For Hives On Legs, Groin, Torso, Palms, Arms And Armpits

I brought my boyfriend into the ER today after an allergic reaction to a ground wasp sting. They gave him 50mg of Benadryl and 125mg of solu-medrol which completely eradicated the hives and flushing. It has been 11 hrs and the hives have returned. He has hives on feet, legs, groin, torso, chest, palms, arms and armpits. There is even a few on his face, lower lip and near the eyes. He is also experiencing stomach pain. There is no sign of tongue or throat swelling and his breathing is fine. I gave him 50mg of Benadryl 2 hours ago and another 50mg 1 hour ago. The Benadryl is not helping at all. Should I bring him back into the ER to get the hives under control or should we try to toughen it out at home?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thank you for your question. If you give him and his rash not go away, his doctor might suggest that he take steroids medicine for a short time. Steroid work well to relieve his itching and reduce swelling. But he should not take them for long time because they can cause serious side effects. Make sure he get steroid prescription from his doctor. If any symptoms of respiratory involved such as shortness of breath, throat swelling, blue appearance, difficult to swallow you should bring him to ER for a quick evaluation and treatment.

Hives can be also caused by many reasons. Make sure he know what is the trigger of Hives that effect to him. So avoid those trigger it is very helpful for the future prevention.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards,
Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, General and Family Physician.
