Hello there,
Thank you for your question.
It is not advisable for someone on Metoprolol to abruptly stop the medicine as there is significant chance of rebound hypertension, tachycardia and also high chance of heart attacks. What you experienced was an expected side effect of not taking Metoprolol for a week after taking it continuously for some time. Please try to keep extra stock of the medicine and do not suddenly stop Metoprolol. Now with Metoprolol your BP and pulse has come back to normal so continue. If you wish to discontinue your Metoprolol you need to taper the dose and gradually stop it after consent from your treating physician who can monitor BP and pulse regularly while you taper the doses.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
