Suggest Treatment For High Fever With Swollen Eyes, Nose And Eyelids

Hi, My son has had a fever for 3 days now.... ranges from 103 - 104.5. His eye lid, nose and above his eye (part of the forehead) are swollen. He tested negative for strep. Our family doctor did blood work to test for lymes. I m still waiting for the results. His neck and forehead hurt...as well as his eye. I m just looking for a second opinion on what you may think it could be. As of right now he is on Amoxicillin. Thank you in advance for any insight you can give me. ;)

Hello,

High fever with swollen eyes and nose may be due to any of the following causes:
1) Viral sore throat
2) Acute sinus infection
3) Influenza
4) Meningitis
5) Dacryocystitis or inflammation of lacrimal sac

All the above can be diagnosed by clinical examination and testing.
1) In viral sore throat, pain in throat and severe congestion of throat on examination are the features.
2) In acute sinus infection, severe headache and nose block are usual.
3) Influenza also presents with almost similar symptoms.
4) Meningitis presents with neck pain and neck stiffness.
Amoxicillin is a very good first line antibiotics of choice. Mostly the infection gets resolved by the time of completion of the course of antibiotic. He needs more of liquids to prevent dehydration.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
