I am age 62, male with history of copd. Been running fever for 4 days between 99 and 101 degrees. Very sluggish and pulling on my inhalers and nebulizer much more than normal. Windy weather conditions may also contribute to breathing issues. Been monitoring and decreased physical activity. What else can I do???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

This is an acute exacerbation of COPD. This occurs in Copd. Many times caused by virus however sometimes also by bacteria.

In acute exacerbation, we do regular nebulizations. Besides these an oral steroids for 7 days also hasten the recovery and is recommended.

If there are change is sputum colour or amount then we also advise a 10 days course of antibiotics. If recurrent we advise getting vaccinated for H influenza and O Pneumococcal.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
