Dear Renay,
I appreciate your concern for the treatment of high BP.
Persistently high BP (measured on three different occasions ) of more than 140/90 mm Hg usually is usually treated with lifestyle modifications and medication.
The reason why high BP occurs is in most of the cases the cause is not known. In some cases there are certain underlying conditions like
vascular disease of the kidney,
pheochromocytoma, cushing's disease or drug induced.
The selection of a suitable
antihypertensive medication depends upon presence of co morbid conditions like diabetes,
bronchial asthma, heart failure, etc.
To begin with an
ACE Inhibitor like Lisinopril or
Angiotensin Receptor Blocker like Losartan is the first line of treatment of high BP. The response to the treatment is usually measured after 2 weeks of treatment.
A baseline routine lab investigation including fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, kidney function tests, ECG, Chest X ray, etc are mandatory as they will help to rule out other co morbid medical conditions.
Along with regular intake of BP lowering medicines, healthy lifestyle habits can help you control high BP.
These habits include:
1. Dietary salt restriction:
A low-sodium diet can help you manage your BP. You should try to limit the amount of sodium that you eat.
2. Routine physical activity can lower high BP and reduce your risk for other health problems.
3. Maintaining a healthy weight can help you control
high blood pressure and reduce your risk for other health problems. If you’re overweight or obese, try to lose weight.
4. Avoid alcohol, smoking and stress.
Hope the suggestion given above could be of great help in controlling the high BP.
wishing you best of your health.
A feed back is appreciated.
