Suggest Treatment For Herniated Disc Repair At L5-S1 & Numbness At Back

What kind of doctor is best for my daughter? She injured her back doing high impact dance on stilts last Sept, had herniated disc repair at L5-S1 in Jan, ortho surgeon said he had to yank hard on nerve to reach surgical site, would be several months healing, still has swelling, fluid, pain in right leg down to toes and some pain in left side of back and leg now with numbness in back of right thigh and burning in toes. Want to address cause rather than mask pain. Thought a neurologist would be good, but several in Orlando have refused her. Went to pain clinic but lost doctor from insurance change; also his advice conflicted with surgeon s. Lost Primary care as well. New PC won t give her any pain meds except cymbalta which she can t tolerate, no pain meds- won t get any help for 3 wks. To whom do I turn? ER? urgent care? surgeon doesn t want to prescribe pain med either. Feel like I m up a creek without a paddle and blindfolded.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

These symptoms are part of lumbar disc degeneration with PIVD where the nerves get compressed by the protruded disc.
There are several treatment modalities with medicines, physiotherapy and with injections in the back called epidural injections and root/facet blocks.
If you don’t get better with these treatment ,I suggest you undergo surgery, by which the nerves are decompressed by removing the protruded disc (discectomy), which would significantly improve your symptoms

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
