Suggest Treatment For Headache And Swollen Lymph Node In The Neck

I have a swollen lump at the right side of the back of my neck, I also have weird pain in my ears, and headaches that seem to start at the base of skull and move up the right side of my head to my R temple. Frequently have clear discharge from nose and hear clicking when opening my mouth up wide. Its been going on for a few months but is getting worse instead of better.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. There can be one of two disorders present in your case that can be confirmed by the specialist after clinical examination.

Firstly, you might be suffering from ear infection in your right ear. The pain you are feeling in head, base of skull, and temple might be referred pain that will go away along with the ear infection and pain. To confirm this, you should consult an ENT specialist to clinically examine your ear and give treatment for the infection.

The other possibility might be infection in the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint). This joint is responsible for the opening and closing of jaws along with side to side movements of the jaw. The joint lies very near to ear and often infection in the joint cavity is felt as ear pain and clicking sounds when you open and close mouth. To confirm this diagnosis, you should visit an oral & maxillofacial surgeon to physically examine the joint and for further investigations.

You should first visit an ENT specialist and if only the ear is free of infection, and oral & maxillofacial surgeon should be seen. Acetaminophen 500 mg or Ibuprofen 400 mg can be taken twice a day for relief in pain.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
