Suggest Treatment For Hallucinations And Mood Swings In A Dementia Patient

My Mom has dementia, she is 70. Her Dr prescribed Megestrol Acetate 40ML a day. I stopped it after 3 days as it was making her different in the way of her actions, she seems lost, she doesn t complete a sentence, she halucinates a little. Crabby moods. We have not given it to her in 12 days and she is still the same. She was fine before she took it. Is this something dementia people should not have? Some dr.s are saying it should be out of her system but she is still eating a lot of food which did not start until she starting taking Megestrol. Please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Megestrol is not for hallucinations recommended, once get psychologist opinion, do few tests (electrolyte, minerals levels, EEG, vitamins levels too, hemoglobin, ESR) these tests can help and MRI too can be helpful) create good positive atmosphere near her, grand children, family get together etc., things can also help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
