Suggest Treatment For Fragile X Syndrome In Children
Dear Dr.Andrew Rynne, Any latest treatment is available to reverse the Fragile X syndrome in a kid , 8 years old? My son has intellectual, auditory regulation, communication, socialisation, language processing, short term memory problems. He is undergoing Occupational,Speech therapy, Auditory integration therapy etc. But the progress is slow. Please suggest any gene therapy is available to detect the faulty genes and replace it with the healthy genes.. Thanks, Ramya S India

Hi,
Unfortunately, there is no single treatment available for fragile X syndrome. Still, treatment services can help people learn important skills. These services can help learn to talk, walk and interact with others. Early intervention by adequate needed therapies like occupational, speech and behavior modification therapy etc., may improve the life quality of these patients tremendously, particularly, if started at an early age, which is a period of learning of skills.
Use of certain medicines for symptoms of aggression, sleep disturbance, seizures or behavior problems may help the patient in making the life of patient, easy.
Unfortunately, gene therapy for treatment of this condition is not proved yet. Though, the trial with gene therapy for this condition are in pipe line, still most of the tests done to date are on mice, rats and results of these trials are also mixed. Hence, it may take some more time of a decade or so, for this treatment to be successful & be available to the patient for treatment.
