Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Three weeks ago, I got hurt in my small finger of left hand. After coming back home, I searched in internet and found that it is a mallet finger fracture. I took an X-Ray and the report was correct. It is a fracture. I searched a lot on internet and found that it is avulsion fracture finger. Meanwhile, I have put a splint and after two weeks I can see that my finger is straight and looks like normal one. I am currently in Mexico and studying here as an interchange student. The doctor told me that I may have to go through a surgery but I really do not want to go through it. Are there are any alternate options to treat apart from having surgery?
Minor fractures heal on their own at a period of 4-6 weeks provided rest and splint support in proper medical way. It is most important to know the current status of bone healing with a follow up x-ray of the finger and which can guide further form of directions whether surgery is needed or not. If the function is alright without any deformity, healing seen in follow up X-ray, you would probably not require a surgery as per the concern.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
