Suggest Treatment For Excessive Saliva And Acid Reflux

Hi, I m a black forty nine year old male. I m in good health. I ve been having a problem waking up stranglin on my saliva at nite. After a lot of coughing, repositioning, or sitting up which is much better, only after then am I able to go back to sleep. I exercise, watch what I eat, however most of the time I eat to late, which I m trying to break. I drink about two cups of coffee each morning, then water and juice the rest of the day. It seems as if the acid, or whatever, from the coffee comes up from my stomach, goes back down the wrong pipe. I also drank a large jar of pespi cola tonite before bed. What do you think Dr. Connelle

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain there is a possibility that there acid reflux and due to irritation caused by acid there is excessive salivation and mucous formation at the back of throat and it can lead to chocking, acid irritation in throat can lead to coughing..
But it can be confirmed only after a thorough clinical evaluation and upper G.I endoscopy.
If acid reflux is confirmed he/she can advise you to take proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole, antacids, taking small frequent meals, avoiding spicy, acidic foods, drinking plenty of water, taking more of probiotics like Yoghurt, loosing weight if you are obese and sleep with head and chest slightly raised as compared to feet as it will reduce the reflux of acid and ease in sleeping..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
