Suggest Treatment For Dog Scratch Wound With Pus And Rashes On Face
Hi, I was scratched by a dog on the lower leg on Saturday night. Blood was drawn from the wound, i put on sudocrem and a plaster but it began oozing puss. Now i m getting rashes appearing on my face and i ve began concerned as i found out the dog has not had any of its injections and lives in its own poo.
An animal bite or scratch should be initially managed by washing of wound with soap and water. A tetanus toxoid should be taken intramuscularly. Tetanus toxoid is given to avoid tetanus infection. Tetanus spores are present in external environment ubiquitously. An unimmunized animal bite should be considered as potential source of rabies virus until proven otherwise. A rabies vaccination schedule should followed ideally. The wounds which bleed should definitely followed by rabies vaccine as well as immunoglobulin.
Oozing of pus after scratch suggest bacterial infection of the wound. You need to consult your primary health provider for clinical assessment of the wound. Wound dressing, topical antibiotic with/without oral antibiotics will help. Tetanus toxoid can be taken now also.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
