Suggest Treatment For Dog Bite In A 11 Year Old Boy

My 11 yr old son was just bitten by a neighbors dog. He has a small puncture mark, not very deep on his lower calf and some bruising underneath a little smaller in size than a dime. What can I expect this to do from this point, and what should I do as far as treatment? The neighbor assured me that her dog has all of his shots and is up to date. Thanks,Rob

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Rob, Hi & Welcome.
Sorry to know that your beloved son is bitten by your neighbor's dog.
There's nothing to worry about it.
The immediate treatment includes:
1. The wound should be washed & flushed immediately with soap and water for 10–15 minutes. This is the most effective first-aid treatment.
2.Then the wound should be cleaned thoroughly in the emergency room with 70% alcohol or povidone solution.
3. Tetanus toxoid shot should be given when necessary.
4. He may need a course of appropriate antibiotics to prevent possible bacterial infection.
5. There's no need to give anti-rabies vaccines if the offending dog is properly vaccinated against rabies & the efficacy of the vaccine is confirmed by laboratory evidence. Otherwise an appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis (i.e., 5 doses of anti rabies vaccine on days 0,3,7, 14 & 30) should be given. If the dog remains healthy after 10 days during the treatment then there's no need to give the shots on days 14 & 30.
Hope the suggestions would be useful to you.
