Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea, Nausea, Vomiting And Weakness In An Elderly Person
my 96 year old mother who has astent in her bowel had a loose bm yesterday but woke up at 5 this morning with nausea and has been in bed all day feeling weak and nausous, \it is now 1800 and had vomited up clear brown fluid. She has not eaten for almost 24 hrs now and very little fluid intake.
Thank you for asking about your relative. First treat this as emergency. Diarrhea vomiting cause dehydration very fast in elderly leading to renal failure which is more complicated. Give her a lot of fluid and take her to hospital to be given fluid intravenously. This may be food poisoning so antibiotic cover is necessary. Does she have temperature?
Tests to do:
- stool: look for bacterial infection - Kidneys tests - UECs - Full haemogram check if white blood cells are raised.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mutuma Geoffrey Zambezi
