Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea In An Infant

Hi, my 14 month old daughter has been particularly unwell since September. It all started with sickness and diarrhoea. Our gp kept sending us away with its viral. Then i was told she had colic after like 8 weeks of been unwell. She then started to get blood mixed into her stools. So took her ro the hosptial. Who took her of dairy and wheat and took some bloods. The results came back her antibodies levels were really high. She was put back on dairy and told to have a gluten free diet. We about 2 weeks into this wheat free gluten free diet I noticed what look like raw mince in her stools and other parts were white powdery. Took her back to the hospital to be told she is ok and just to wait for her blood test results.. My question is could you possibly shed some light on what s going on with my daughter.

Hello,

According the symptoms that your daughter have I think this is celiac disease. Celiac disease is a condition caused by damage to the lining of the small intestine. This damage comes from a reaction to eating gluten.

This is a substance that is found in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats. It is also found in food made from these ingredients. When children with celiac disease eat foods with gluten, their immune system reacts by damaging the villi. Because of the damage, the villi are unable to properly absorb iron, vitamins, and other nutrients.

As a result, a number of symptoms and health problems may occur. Celiac disease cannot be cured. These symptoms in your child will go away and the villi in the lining of the intestines will heal if you follow a lifelong gluten-free diet. So, you need to follow up your child with a gastroenterologist and lab examination for best results.I wish your daughter a quick recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Monika Dede
