Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea After Taking Kionex

Hi, I am a caregiver of a 88 year old male. He has a colostomy bag and a catheter. Recently his home nurse came for her visit and drew blood. The results came back and his potassium levels are very high. The Dr. put him on Kionex and it caused him to have diarrhea and now he is refusing to take it. Is there something else we can do for him as far as diet goes?

Hi,

Usually, constipation is the unwanted effect of Kionex and not diarrhea. Still, if you are having this side effect, then you may try some natural home remedies like:
- Increasing the calcium intake, as calcium interferes with absorption of potassium in the body resulting in decreased level of potassium. The products rich in calcium like milk, dairy products, yogurt and cheese may be used in sufficient quantities.
- Eating a clove of garlic, morning and evening with a glass of milk also lowers the potassium level by decreasing absorption of potassium.
- Increasing intake of water to flush out the excessive potassium from the body. However, if you are having some kidney disease, then consult with your doctor, as excess fluid intake may cause a strain on your kidneys.
- Reducing intake of tea, coffee, cola drinks and avoiding alcohol intake also helps in reducing potassium levels in body.
- Avoiding food, which are rich in potassium like Banana, peas, potato, papaya, avocado etc.
- Eating fruits and vegetables with low potassium like cucumbers, cauliflower, berries, lettuce, lemon, peaches and canned foods.
- Soy milk and tofu may be taken in adequate quantity, as these are also low in potassium.
- Regular exercise of your body to keep yourself active and healthy may also help in maintaining your potassium level to normal.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
