Suggest Treatment For Depression And Short-term Memory

My husband is depressed and has a history of addiction to alcohol. He walked away from his job over a month ago. I can t get him to eat or do any activity. He has a horrible short term memory lately. What is going on in the brain of someone like this? I know the normal answers of counseling, etc. which I whole-heartedly believe in. I am wondering what this is doing to his brain.
