Suggest Treatment For Cystic Acne On Face, Cheeks And Behind Ears

I have cystic acne on my face, cheeks mostly and also behind my ears. They are extremely itchy. I try as hard as I can not to disturb them by scratching or picking. Although every morning when I wake up all I have to do is rub my face without much pressure and I find the cysts discharging. Some smell like fish, very unpleasant. Others have all kind of different smells, like cheese, salt and vinegar and even a salty smell. I have an appointment with a dermatologist coming up soon. I am a 28 yo male and have had these cysts for about 10 years. What is strange about these cysts is that they are quite small but seem to refill themselves overnight. What I am wondering is why they come only on my face? why do they come at all? and why do different ones smell different from each other. I can understand the blocked pores causing cysts to develop but I don't understand how they come to be behind my ears, on the ear lobes, almost in the middle of the ear lobe flesh. It all seems quite strange to me and I would love to know more about skin and how it works.

Thank you for reading,

Regards Chris

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have symptoms of cystic acne on face, cheeks and behind ears is mainly because of hormonal changes and due to that it causes clogging in skin pores. skin and pores gets blocked and oil from sebaceous glands causes cystic acne on face, cheeks and other areas. Due to hormones surge they stimulate more sebum to be produced and a greater amount of skin cells to proliferate

I would suggest you to wash your face with water frequently. Use cotton dip it in tea tree oil and apply on face. Benzoyl peroxide mixed with water or alcohol combination is the best treatment option for cystic acne. Don't use steroids. Visit dermatologist once if your condition persists and get it examined properly. Laser therapy is another treatment option.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
