Suggest Treatment For Constipation In A 5-month-old

Hello. I have a 5 month old baby boy who is 20 pounds (if that matters). He is extremely constipated. I did a warm water enema using a suction bulb & also tried glycerin suppositories but it hadn’t helped. Someone said try milk of mag. How much should I give him?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

No need to over conscious or worry if five months old baby does not pass the stool for days, actually formation of fecal material matters and that is depends upon the diet, it is not at all advisable to try anything, such as enema or suppository at this age, but be patience, and later or sooner there you could see the stool passing and if not then you have to see the pediatrician. You can just try liquid diet, and no medicine unless doctor advised.

Hope I answered your query, let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Akhtar Husain
