Suggest Treatment For Constipation Along With Bloating

Hi. I haven t been able to pass any stools for a few days and my whole stomach is feeling full and swollen. I would like to use a laxative to help move things along but I m on warfarin because I suffered a P.E 3yrs ago and I also have mitral and aortic leaking valves. Can you advise me on a safe laxative please?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Not being able to pass the stool is a sign of constipation.
Gentle laxatives like senna are safe and very helpful in inducing a bowel movement (bm).

Take lactulose to soften the stool. Probiotics will help stabilize intestinal flora.
Take fiber supplements (e.g. prunes or psyllium) to help forming fecal mass.

Dietary changes can also help:
- increase fluids intake
- have short walking after meal to help bm
- take simethicone for bloating
- include more fiber rich foods in your diet (pear, prunes, kiwi, etc.).

Wish fast recovery.
